Winners of an RIBA South Conservation Award!
van Heyningen and Haward has been awarded the RIBA South Conservation Award 2011 for our No.1 Smithery at Chatham Historic Dockyard. The project won in the category of 're-use of a redundant building'. No.1 Smithery also won an RIBA Award this year as well as being shortlisted for 3 other awards and highly commended by Regeneration and Renewal.

Completion of Barking Project
Our Rivergate Centre at Barking is now open and operating as a working school and community centre. The project is the centrepoint of a regeneration masterplan which will deliver a total of 10,800 homes over the next 25 years to create a vibrant new community for nearly 26,000 people between Barking town centre and the River Thames.

van Heyningen and Haward's No.1 Smithery project at Chatham has been Highly Commended in the Best Use of Heritage in Regeneration category of the Regeneration and Renewal Awards 2011.
Open House 2011
van Heyningen and Haward Architects have two buildings featuring in this year's Open House event across the capital. Both our Rivergate Centre at Barking and the Edward Alleyn Building at Alleyn's School will be open over the weekend of 17th/18th September to the public. Platform opens to the public
The practice have completed our conversion of the listed Hornsey Road Baths into a Performing Arts Centre for young people . The 'MyPlace' funded project opened to the public last month and provides a multi-purpose and flexible space for performance, a media centre and recording studios, dance studios and rehearsal space as well as a café and other social spaces.
New North London Synagogue up for a Brick Award
Our newly completed synagogue for the Masorti community in Finchley has been shortlisted for 'Best Public Building' in this year's Brick Awards.
No.1 Smithery shortlisted for 3R Award
A 7th award shortlisting for our regeneration project at Chatham Historic Dockyard. The scheme is being judged in the 'Best Cultural Buildings' category.

van Heyningen and Haward shortlisted for BD Award
We are delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted for Refubishment Architect of the Year in the BD Architect of the Year Awards 2011. Our work was judged on four of our recent and current projects which deal with work to existing buildings: Guy's Hospital Entrance, No.1 Smithery , Chelmsford College and Platform. Winners will be announced in November.

Our No.1 Smithery project at Chatham Historic Dockyard is shortlisted for yet more awards. It was recently announced that it is on the shortlist for both the Regeneration and Renewal Award for the best use of heritage in regeneration and the RIBA South/South East Conservation Award for re-use of a redundant building.

Quintin Kynaston School receives planning permission
van Heyningen and Haward Architects is delighted to report that our project at Quintin Kynaston School, part of the City of Westminster's secondary school redevelopment programme being delivered by Bouygues UK, has received planning consent. The new c13,500m2 9 form entry school, incorporating a Respite and Re-engagement unit and sixth form, is part of the comprehensive redevelopment of the Malborough Hill campus.
vHH chosen for Philippe Rotthier European Prize Exhibition in Brussels
We are proud to annouce our inclusion in the Phillippe Rotthier European Prize for Architecture Exhibition at the Fondation pour l'Architecture in Brussels. van Heyningen and Haward's No.1 Smithery project was one of only 30 to be chosen for the exhibition out of hundreds of entries from across Europe.

Observer Ethical Awards 2011
van Heyningen and Haward Architects and Essex Wildlife Trust's regeneration of the Mucking Landfill site in Essex has been recognised with an Observer Ethical Award 2011. This high profile accolade was awarded to the client for "turning 845 acres of landfill site on the north bank of the Thames into a living landscape for wildlife and people". van Heyningen and Haward is the lead designer on the £2m project, due for completion early 2012.
Latymer Science Building Highly Commended at BCSE Awards Ceremony
Our new Science and Library building has been Highly Commended in the Excellence in Design For Teaching & Learning: Independent category at the BCSE Awards. The building is our fourth project for Latymer Upper School and the culmination of a 15 year relationship emcompassing an overall vision.

No.1 Smithery wins an RIBA Award
Our new visitor and exhibition centre at Chatham Historic Dockyard has been recognised with an RIBA Award. The judges were particularly impressed with how "the falling-down majesty of the existing buildings has been artfully retained and gently restored". The building is also shortlisted for a BCi Award.

Our recently completed project, No.1 Smithery, at Chatham Historic Dockyard has been shortlisted in all three categories of the RICS South East Awards; Building Conservation/Regeneration/Community Benefit. The project has also been shortlisted for an RIBA Award.

New Synagogue and Bird Hide completed
We are pleased to report that our new Synagogue in North London reached completion this month. The project was the development of an earlier masterplan by the practice, and required detailed consulation with English Heritage due to its proximity to listed buildings. We can also announce that our Purfleet Hide on Rainham Marshes for the RSPB has also been completed. The project is a continuation of our work in the area and for the RSPB, for whom we designed our Environment and Education Centre nearby.

Visitor Centre Planning Permission
Our new visitor centre for Essex Wildlife Trust at Mucking has recently received planning permission. We have appointed a contractor and works will be starting on site in the next few weeks. The project is due for completion later this year.

Kaleidoscope in print
We are proud to announce that our Kaleidoscope Children and Young People's Centre has been featured in a new publication by architecture critic Kenneth Powell. 21st Century London: The New Architecture, showcases the most exciting architectural projects in London since 2000, including our exemplary health centre at Lewisham.
Chelmsford College Redevelopment
van Heyningen and Haward have recently been granted planning permission for our college redevelopment scheme at both the Princes Road and Moulsham Street sites in Chelmsford.

Book Launch
We are proud to have launched our new book, van Heyningen and Haward: Buildings and Projects (Right Angle Publishing). The launch party at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith was a great success, and included tours of our four buildings at the school. The image on the left shows some of the guests in our Edward Latymer Theatre. The book explores the history of the practice and gives an overview of some of our projects in that time. It includes contributions from Patrick Lynch, Kenneth Powell, Ian Latham and Trevor Garnham and is widely available from most architectural bookshops.
Brick Awards 2010
van Heyningen and Haward was recently announced as the winner of the Brick Award 2010 for Best Outdoor Space. The refurbishment of St John’s College, Cambridge was awarded the accolade for its beautiful landscaping and cleverly linked outdoor areas.
Chelmsford College Redevelopment
The practice has submitted planning documents for the redevelopment of Chelmsford College and expect to hear the outcome by February at the latest.

Our restored Smithery at Chatham Historic Dockyard opened
to the public this summer to a fabulous reception. As part of the wider regeneration of the area, the building sets a benchmark for the standard of conservation of listed buildings combined with the installation of hi-tech specialised exhibition and storage spaces. We are pleased to announce that our new performing arts centre for young people in Islington has recently started on site and is due for completion in March 2011.
Thames Gateway Visitor Centres
van Heyningen and Haward are delighted to announce that our two projects in the Thames Gateway were recently granted planning permission. Our £2m visitor centre for Essex Wildlife Trust will provide information and education as well as a café and shop, whilst our new bird hide at Rainham Marshes for the RSPB will provide bird-watching facilities for all visitors.

National Museums at Chatham - Opening Exhibition
Our restoration of the No.1 Smithery, Chatham Historic Dockyard
is almost complete, with the building opening to the public in July. The first exhibition to be held in it's purpose-built galleries opens on the 24th July and showcases a significant series of works by Sir Stanley Spencer. His paintings are displayed alongside 28 drawings and other historical dockyard objects which give a unique insight into the lives and work of shipbuilders on the Clyde. London Festival of Architecture Sky Rides- 26th June
van Heyningen and Haward, in partnership with Southwark Cyclists, are hosting a Thames Path cycle ride as part of the London Festival of Architecture week of events. The route will run from London Bridge along the river, with a lunch stop at Barking Riverside Ltd (BRL) offices and finishing with tea at our RSPB Environment and Education Centre at Rainham Marshes. Civic Trust Awards 2010
The Dennis Sciama Building, University of Portsmouth, has been awarded a commendation by the Civic Trust Awards.
Visitor Centre, Essex Wildlife Trust
van Heyningen and Haward were recently the winners of a competition to design a new visitor centre for the new Thurrock Thameside Nature Park in Essex for Essex Wildlife Trust. The nature park is situated on a landfill site which is currently still in use but undergoing restoration.

RSPB Bird Hide, Rainham Marshes
The practice have won a competition to design a new bird hide for the RSPB at Rainham Marshes. The hide is designed to be buried in the existing bund and will be the first stop for most visitors the park after van Heyningen and Hawards 2006 Environment and Education Centre.
Essex BSF
van Heyningen and Haward are part of Skanska UK's successful bid for Essex Building Schools for the Future. vHH has worked with other members of Skanska's team, giving "critical friend" advice on the sample school designs.

BREEAM Excellent Certification for RSPB Centre
We have received confirmation of the BREEAM Excellent Certificate for RSPB Environment and Education Centre, Rainham Marshes, Essex. A new wind turbine also makes the building carbon neutral in operation.
