Chinese Painting Gallery, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

The gallery is positioned at the entrance of the Ashmolean and has the responsibility of signalling a new museum attitude towards accessibility to its entire collection. The planning of the gallery enables it to be integrated into the Ashmolean, without compromising the stringent environmental and lighting controls required for the exhibits. The need to accommodate varying levels within a very confined space has led to the development of a three-dimensional use of volume which is both functional and exciting.
