No.1 Smithery, Chatham Historic Dockyard
The No.1 Smithery, (completed July 2010) is a partnership project between the Trustees of Chatham Historic Dockyard, the National Maritime Museum and the Imperial War Museum, which provides dedicated facilities for the Museums’ ship models (over 4,000), a Touring Exhibition Gallery, and a thematic display in the Permanent Exhibition Gallery and orientation Gallery. The building is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade II* listed, but the project has allowed the full restoration of the historic fabric, with van Heyningen and Haward carefully establishing a counterpoint between the new interventions and the detail of the historic fabric. Visitors to Chatham, who have come to view the models and explore this era of maritime history, will be left in no doubt about the original structure and workings of the Smithery.
