New North London Synagogue, Manor House, London
About The Project
The
New North London Synagogue (NNLS) was founded in 1975 and had outgrown its
existing accommodation. NNLS is part of the Sternberg Centre, home to several
other Jewish organisations. We were commissioned as masterplanner and
co-ordinating architect for the redevelopment of the historically significant site,
and as architect for a new synagogue for the NNLS. The planning process
included detailed negotiations with English Heritage. Framing the Manor House
to one side, the new synagogue is conceived as a garden wall, behind which sit flexible
spaces including three prayer venues, a nursery and teenagers’ room, as well as
social and administrative spaces.
